Day 27 – Kings Beach – Tahoe XC – Pacific Grove. 13km skating (69 total)

Yes, I DO know the way to San Jose.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Could have easily just driven today, but couldn’t leave the lake without a last ski. Trails at Tahoe XC were sensational – beautifully groomed and reasonably fast, and a lovely viewpoint over the lake. Would have liked to do more, but the last road trip was calling.

Beautiful weather as drove down the Truckee valley from the lake, then over the spectacular mountains around Donner Summit and down through the forests toward Sacramento. Had hoped to visit one of the Redwood parks along the way, but had to keep pushing to get to Monterey with at least a little light left in the day.

Quite weird to see grass covered hillsides after weeks in high desert country, and as usual was struck by the strangeness of eucalypts lining the sides of the freeways. Stuck to the freeways all day, and after bypassing Sacramento headed through the outskirts of San Jose before heading south on the 101.

Finally made it through to Pacific Grove – just south of Monterey – with enough light left to have a quick walk down to the coast – only a couple of minutes from the motel. Should have time enough to have a wander around in the morning.
