Most impressive thunderstorms about 3 am – watching lightning flashes through the tent roof and listening to the rain pour down. Actually cool enough to wear a vest when setting off. 2 ambulances at the bottom of the first descent of the day was a bit sobering but didn’t stop the crazies passing others on the wrong side of the road by the next hill. After a few small climbs and one long descent the rest of the day was pretty much just small bumps. Had to do a few km along the South Gippsland Hwy and made you realise just how quiet the roads we’ve been on have been.
Head wind had started to pick up as we headed into Inverloch and got a pleasant surprise when Viv and Sue met us with an esky with beer and wine. Sub had finally come out properly by now and was most pleasant lying around drinking. But finally had to reluctantly haul myself back onto the bike and off along the coast toward Cape Patterson. Straight away the wind seemed stronger and the legs felt like lead – this was going to be much tougher than just doing a few km back from a winery! Great views along the coast but very happy to head away from it to get a side and even occasionally tail wind and much easier ride into Wonthaggi. Headed off on the rail trail and most enjoyable. Once again a good hard surface and thankfully had a fair bit of vegetation along the fringes. Fantastice views as we crested the small rise before rolling down into Kilcunda, though almost getting blown off the old bridge. Crossed the highway for a long last climb through to Anderson then rejoined the road through to San Remo – all of a sudden back in heavy traffic and made you realise the real benefit of the trail.
San Remo campsite was trying to beat Queenscliff as the most spread out, and our truck was of course at the farthest point, but it meant we got a great campsite overlooking the water. Very windy and a few of the cheaper tents around were struggling but well worth it. Had taken us all day to get here and only had time for a quick wander round town but did get some very yummy pork skewers. After dinner settled down with a few reds watched the sun disappear and entertained by a great band. All good.
