Last nights steady rain had turned to drizzle. Headed for the coast, grabbed some breakfast and coffee at Half Moon Bay and headed south. While not as dramatic as Big Sur this section of coast nevertheless has some pretty impressive sections. Weather not conducive to photos but nice and atmospheric nevertheless. Stopped in Santa Cruz for a quick break and found a good coffee (which almost balanced out the very ordinary one at breakfast) then headed on, and as Monterey drew near the rain finally stopped and the sun came out.
Have stayed here three times previously but it’s always been a flying visit en route to Big Sur and beyond, but this time I’m staying 2 nights so I can get to see the place a bit. Also broke with tradition and rather than staying in the cheap end motel strip that’s just a bit too far out of town to walk anywhere, managed to find somewhere a bit more up market but still affordable and only 5 minute walk from the beach and 15 from downtown. Just wandered for the afternoon without getting into much – still hobbling a bit so nothing too strenuous. Light rain again before dusk so wipeout in terms of sunset photos and made for a damp walk to and from dinner. Finished off the day with dinner of crab cakes and Sand Dabs (small local flounder-like fish) washed down with a local wheat beer. And no fries with the meal – doesn’t get much better.
