Day 23 – Powder Mountain. 2200m vertical (48900 total)

My farewell to 2009 and my 92nd day on snow for the calendar year. I look forward to trying to better that sometime in the future. With a forecast of clearing weather I figured Alta would be like feeding time at the zoo, so back to Powder Mountain in a nice touch of symmetry – the location of the first ski day on Jan 17. Weather had cleared in Salt Lake but was snowing lightly in Ogden. Despite yeterdays bus saga decided bus was the go again today.

Alternated between sun, cloud, wind and the occasional flurry during the day. Unfortunately Paradise was still closed which meant lots of traffic in the powder areas off Hidden Lake and Sunrise. They’d had a few cm less snow than Alta, and spent most of the morning working the trees and the shrubs off Sunrise. Though much of it was trashed still great skiing and the occasional couple of turns in the untracked. And when you emerged back out onto the groomers they were skiing sensationally.

Great fun but when I stopped for lunch at 2 I realised that I had neither the energy or enthusiasm to keep going so hopped on the bus, recaffeinated in Eden then back to REI in Salt Lake for some final retail therapy – I really need to keep myself out of this place.

New forecast now calls for more snow over the necyt couple of days – eans I STILL don’t know where to head for tomorrow. Decisions, Decisions.
