Day 2 – Solitude. 950m vertical

Very slow start to the day as I tried to figure out where to spend the first part of the trip. All my favourite areas near here are either still closed or barely open, so will head north in search of more snow Friday, after a trip to Alta, which is due to open more terrain there midday Friday. So as usal when there is any reason for not skiing, then I revert to my next favourite pastime – shopping. Lovely clear day but still well below zero.

Finally headed toward Solitude in early afternoon where you can get multiple ride tickets as well as day tickets – just the thing when you just want a gentle warm up. However, had forgotten how COLD it gets early afternoon here as soon as the slopes go into shadows. Just a few groomers open and pleasant enough without being exciting, but after just 3 runs I’d had enough and the cold just kept seeping through. Met an Aussie expat tele skier at the top of the hill who had moved to Salt Lake 4 years ago and worked in REI (skiing and outdoor gear heaven combined – some people get ALL the breaks!)

Fled back down the hill, bought more supplies and settled down to check snow reports and plan the next few days.

Had 2 senior moments today – first off couldn’t remeber the PIN’s for several of my many credit / debit / travel cards, then managed to lose my room key. oh well.
