Day 7. Mansfield – Alexandra

Back to the normal routine, away at a pretty good time with a bit of a blast from the past with coffee (and more raisin toast) at The Witches Brew. Cut off onto the rail trail just out of town – fine riding on a firm gravel surface. Now we had always planned to do most of today on the rail trail – the main road here really is not very bicycle friendly – but after some particularly stupid behavior of some of the riders the police forced the WHOLE ride off the road and onto the rail trail. Made for a much busier trail than expected and lots of punctures for roadies who really weren’t expecting to be riding these conditions.

For the second year in a row managed to meet up with a family member as brother Malcolm left the serenity of the holiday home just out of Bonnie Doon and came down to say gday. ┬áMuch easier riding today but still crazy hot. After a shady lunch at Yarck I thought they might have thought we’d been punished enough and let us back on the road, but no, we got to do the full rail trail experience which added another 6 km or so. It might have been a relatively easy day but it was becoming a long one.

Finally in to Alexandra and a wonderful spread out camp site with SHADE! Tried the novelty of being able to lie down in the tent in daylight but after 5 minutes was almost in a sleep that would have lasted well past dinner, so we all headed into town for a drink and a wander. Followed probably the best meal of the trip with a return to town for an evening coffee. So nice not to be camped out in the boondocks somewhere.
