Day 18 Sun 23/12. Powder Mountain 4100m (53670 total)

Powder Mtn reporting 2 in overnight and Alta just a trace, so I get to visit another of my favourites. Cloud still hanging in over the northern mountains and even a little drizzle along I-15, but cloud pretty much dissipated as got to Powder Mountain parking area. A bit underwhelming initially – I knew Paradise wasn’t running yet but things were looking pretty scratchy, but first run down the groomers to Hidden Lake was great and from the top headed straight to Sunrise and the trees. The 2 inches was barely that out in the open but amongst the trees was significantly more and I had a ball. Did lap after lap just taking different lines through the trees – each time could always find several pairs of aspen just asking to be skiied between. While it was a bit lumpy underneath the fresh in parts, the skiing was great.

People either get this place or they don’t and those that don’t probably would have headed for the bar after a few runs. I stopped at 2 but only because I wanted to keep some energy for the last 2 days – was tempting to just keep lapping until I couldn’t walk. Amazingly quiet for what would be a holiday weekend for many – the joys of skiing Utah on a Sunday when it NEVER gets busy. Sunny, calm, warm, uncrowded and fresh snow – doesn’t get much better.

Easy drive back past Snowbasin – looking VERY scratchy at the base of Strawberry – to Salt Lake. Still looking at 10 – 20 inches tonight into tomorrow. Bring it on.
