Day 1 Sat 18/2 Gisborne Loop Ride 56km 95m climbing

Up for sunrise on the beach and a leisurely breakfast – very nice not to have to pack up the tent.  Route didn’t open till 9 and I was away some time after that after fitting my new wireless speedo.  A little wind and warmed up quickly but pretty comfortable really.  Very easy days riding and only one 30 m climb – followed by a short but sweet 50 kmh descent and enjoyable enough ride without being anything special.  Highlight was the little 500 year old forest remnant at the rest area – just a tiny oasis and all that remains of what used to be extensive forests in the area.

Back to camp about 12.30 and very pleased to find my tent already under shade – excellent site selection.  Back into town and finally managed to get the profiles printed that I’d been rushing to finish yestreday morning.  Almost found myself wishing for a repeat of yesterdays thunderstorm just to cool things down a bit.  Rode around town a bit, had a coffee and rode over to the beach on the other side of the river.  After dinner down to the beach to finish of the bottle of red from yesterday and watch the sunset again.  A person could get used to this.
